Languages Department

The Department of Languages gained its autonomy to become a full department in 2021. Before it became an established department, it was a Unit under the General Arts Department. The department oversees the teaching and learning of five examinable subjects“ English Language, French, Fante, Twi (Asante and Akuapem) and Literature-in- English.

The staff strength of the department currently stands at twenty-one (21) comprising sixteen (16) males and five(5) females. These hardworking teachers are ably headed by the amiable and evergreen Mrs. Estherlyn Gaisie (nee Graham). The department currently proudly boasts of nine (9) examiners with the West African Examination Council (WAEC).

Over the years, the department has fostered the effective teaching and learning of these subjects (languages). Students are able to freely and easily express themselves in the English language especially. Also, under the auspices of the department, the Debaters and Writers Club has performed creditably well in recent years. Notable among these success stories is being crowned Regional Champions in the 66th Independence Debate Competition in 2021 and becoming runners-up in the Southern Super-zonal competition. Three years before, the debaters went through to the final where they became runners-up in the National competition.

The department organizes regular in-service training and peer-mentoring programmes to keep teachers abreast of current trends in the teaching of the subjects under it to promote effective teaching and learning to benefit students.
